COM 295 Week 2 Discussion Question Message Bias

Find a letter and point out the biased language.

Explain how you would replace the biased words with a more preferable approach.

Here is an email from a person in my company that I think best shows bias.

Jim,

The guys in the warehouse are having issues with getting orders filled in a timely manner. This causes the girls in the office to have to take a large number of complaints. Can you check to see what is holding the guys back from fulfilling the orders. Thanks

This is a typical example of gender bias that occurs in my workplace constantly. We have males and females that work both in the warehouse and in the office. There is no need to characterize the workers by gender as it makes the situation sound somehow the fault of men in the warehouse. This letter could easily be fixed simply by making it gender neutral.

Jim,

The workers in the warehouse are having issues with getting orders filled in a timely manner. This causes the office staff to have to take a large number of complaints. Can you check to see what is holding the warehouse back from fulfilling the orders. Thanks
