In this scenario I would use a psychoanalytic approach to understanding the behavior of the widower. In the absence of in-home care and nursing home care I would try to get this gentleman involved in some form of senior community program. But if the gentlemen is suffering from loneliness and perhaps even an organic pathology such as dementia or Alzheimer’s; the psychoanalytic approach may provide the diagnosis needed to have him committed.
Although this is not a perfect solution it is in the best interest of the patient. Social policies that may affect this outcome would be lack of funding for medical care for seniors. It is my belief that social policies fail to help situations of this nature. Because of lack of funding this gentleman may be forced to be committed in psychiatric ward for lack of proper nursing care.
