My first priority in this scenario would be to get this woman proper medical treatment. If I could convince this woman to be hospitalized I would then try to arrange housing for her at the House of Ruth or another shelter for battered women. Beyond the immediate dangers, I would then take a humanistic approach with a strain in assertion training. I would begin this process by trying to convince this mother of the necessity to leave her husband and even press charges.
There are inherent problems when dealing with battered women. Battered Woman Syndrome and fear make change a frightening experience for women in these situations. I believe that policies need to change to reflect a longer commitment to battered women.
