COMM 110 Group Communication Reflection

Consider the experiences you had throughout this course (and any other courses or experiences) with peer feedback on presentations, discussions, and your collaboration as preparation for your Effective Listening presentations.

Review Ch. 14 of Public Speaking and consider the information presented about working with groups and teams.

Write a 350- to 700-word reflection on group communication in which you answer the following questions:

  • Was your experience collaborating with and receiving feedback from your Learning Team helpful? Explain.
  • How can working with others help improve your presentation skills? How can it complicate things?
  • Did you find collaborating with your Learning Team in preparation for your final presentation helpful? Why or why not?
  • What are some guidelines to help groups work together when problem solving and presenting?
  • How can you use the information you learned and the experience you have with working in groups to improve your presentation skills in the future?

I have not been a fan of the Learning Team experience. I find that this system of learning is difficult and does not seem to work well at least within the context of my experience. However, I did find that collaboration in this class was helpful due to the fact that the feedback given by peers was able to directly influence my ongoing presentation assignments.

I collaborated with several students on the final presentation and this was helpful because there were areas of the assignments that I did not realize were problems. For example, my use of power point was not proficient because I had adopted practices which were not conducive to making a quality presentation. For instance, I overused text on slides which created a difficult to follow presentation. Errors such as this were brought to my attention by peers and this helped to create a smother flowing presentation. I was also able to improve the content of my project by receiving feedback concerning areas of misunderstanding that needed more explaining or clarity.

The group process is heavily dependent on the ability of the group to communicate properly. I think this is an issue in many teams.  Guidelines should be designated when operating in groups that include:

  • Establish Leadership- leadership must be clearly identified in a group.
  • Establish a communication plan- communication needs to be orderly and efficient.
  • Delegate Responsibilities- groups work better when the members know their specific duties.
  • Set Goals- The group must work towards the same goals to be effective (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008).

These guidelines appear to work the best for creating a cohesive group.  In the future I will likely incorporate these guidelines into my workplace when dealing with teams.  I believe that using this system and obtaining feedback provides the best means for developing a successful team and delivering the products of that teams efforts.
